Hailing from the first crop of MGSW Protonico, Medina Spirit flew into the 147th Kentucky Derby like a stealth bomber and emerged victorious over a much heralded field of 19 top three-year-old colts. Let go at 12-1, the dark bay with a beautifully efficient running style, made the lead with John Velazquez on board and controlled the pace of the entire race, digging in gamely to cross the wire in front. Previously second in the G2 San Felipe S. and the G1 Santa Anita Derby, Medina Spirit again showed his great heart and determination, a trait exhibited time and time again by his sire Protonico who himself won or was on the board in six graded races and earned just shy of $1,000,000.

Castleton Lyons would like to extend heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Oussama Aboughazale, breeder and owner of Protonico through his racing and stallion career, who has given incredibly strong support to get his stallion's career off to great start; Medina Spirit's owner, Mr. Amr Zedan of Zedan Racing; Bob Baffert trainer of a record seven Kentucky Derby winners; Breeder Gail Rice and Agent Gary Young who purchased Medina Spirit as a two year old.
