On a night interrupted by severe thunderstorms causing a lengthy delay to the $100,000 Debutante Stakes, Upset Brewing, a maiden making just her second start ran an excellent race in defeat at Churchill on Friday June 30th. The daughter of Justin Phillip, trained by 'Buff' Bradley missed the break in this 6-furlong test and looked beaten early, and jockey Shaun Bridgmohan had to make a huge mid-race move on the outer to gain a good spot as the favorite Sunny Skies set a fast pace. Swinging around the bend 5-wide the filly gained ground quickly on the pace setters to be just denied at the wire by a rapidly decreasing 1 3/4 lengths to Sunny Skies. With this performance Upset Brewing became the first stakes performer for her sire Justin Phillip.
