Castleton Lyons is delighted to announce that Justin Phillip will commence stud duties for the 2014 breeding season at a fee of $12,500 November 1st terms. This exceptional G1 winning sprinter raced at the highest level with top performances in an era when breeders have commented that the modern thoroughbred is supposedly not as tough as it used to be. Trained by Steve Asmussen, Justin Phillip raced 32 times over a four year career including 23 lifetime starts in graded stakes, winning or placed in 11 of them. One of the highlight for this classy, tough and sound sprinter was an impressive victory in the G1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap at Saratoga last August where Justin Phillip scored decisively by two lengths in a fast time of 1:08.59 for six furlongs. In this race the colt tracked the early pacesetters before forging clear in the hands of Johnny Velazquez to win by an easy two lengths to earn a Beyer speed figure of 109. Throughout a solid and unswerving career, Justin Phillip attained Beyer figures of at least 100 on nine separate occasions. Justin Phillip also won the G2 Woody Stephens Stakes at Belmont and the G3 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap at Oaklawn and was placed in some of the premier stallion making races on the calendar, the G1 Vosburgh, G1 Forego and a previous edition of the G1 Vanderbilt. In recent times the Vanderbilt has been won by some of the most exciting sires in Kentucky including War Front and Speightstown and we hope that the naturally speedy Justin Phillip enjoys an important and successful career at Castleton Lyons.
Shane Ryan, president of Castleton Lyons said "We are very excited to stand Justin Phillip at Castleton Lyons and pleased to have had the opportunity to develop the next chapter in this extremely good looking colt’s career. He has been expertly handled by Steve Asmussen and is an excellent example of a big all-American dirt horse that we hope will be well received by the breeders. In addition to Justin Phillip’s race record we were attracted to this stallion prospect as his pedigree is from one of the most active female families in the stud book. His dam Ava Knowsthecode has had five black type winners to date with a $1.2million 2013 September Sales graduate to race in 2014”
Ahmed Zayat of Zayat Stables commented, "Justin Phillip is an awesome physical specimen. He’s as good looking as any horse we’ve ever had. We’re excited about his stallion career at Castleton Lyons, and will give him plenty of support to make him successful”
Steve Asmussen said "Justin Phillip is a remarkable horse. It is rare to see a grand looking horse with his speed and talent that is able to stay as sound as he’s been while racing at the highest of levels. He shows up every time, and his win in this year’s Grade 1 Vanderbilt at Saratoga was one of the best sprint performances I have seen all year”
Justin Phillip will be available for inspection at Castleton Lyons commencing on Tuesday November 5th, and throughout the November Sale from 10am to 2pm daily. For further information, please contact 859 455 9222
