Storm Mayor named Argentina’s Horse of the Year and BERNSTEIN named STALLION OF THE YEAR

STORM MAYOR , the two-time defending winner of South America’s prestigious Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini (Arg-G1), was honored as Argentina’s 2006 Horse of the Year during presentations at the Carlos Pellegrini Awards on Tuesday night at San Isidro racecourse in Buenos Aires. The Carlos Pelligrini Awards honor divisional championships in Argentine racing.

Campaigned in Argentina by Angel Dijiani’s Stud Starlight, STORM MAYOR recorded three Group 1 wins from four starts last season, including impressive victories in the Gran Premio de Honor (Arg-G1) at Palermo and Gran Premio Copa de Oro – Don Alfredo Lalor (Arg-G1) at San Isidro. In December, the Southern Hemisphere four-year-old by Bernstein became the first horse to win back-to-back editions of the Pellegrini since Filon captured South America’s signature event in 1945.

Bred in Argentina by Haras La Biznaga, Storm Mayor is out of the Egg Toss mare Maya Toss, who was honored as Broodmare of the Year. Storm Mayor also was named champion stayer and champion older horse. Storm Mayor became the first champion for Central Kentucky-based sire Bernstein, who stands for $30,000 at Dr. Tony Ryan’s Castleton Lyons in Lexington. Bernstein was named Stallion of the Year for the second consecutive year. Ryan’s dual Group 1 winner Storm Military (Arg), by Bernstein, was crowned champion miler.
